Nestled between the Ligurian Sea and the Maritime Alps, the Ligurian region is a land of history and passageways, a strategic narrow corridor used by great civilizations.
The Ligurians, a people of Indo-European origin, inhabited these craggy lands long before Rome, living by the rhythm of the sea and terraced farming.
With Rome, Liguria became a coveted territory, crossed by the Via Aurelia, the mythical road linking Rome and Gaul.
A few centuries later, in the Middle Ages between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Cinque Terre took shape: five fortified villages, built vertically.
Each is a citadel clinging to the rock, protected by its isolation.
Villages became agricultural and seafaring bastions of the Republic of Genoa: the “Superba”, master of the sea and of Mediterranean trade.
For several centuries, the villages were inward-looking, with access only by boat or mule-track; time stood still, but traditions survived.
It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that the railroads broke through the cliffs and began to open the Cinque Terre to the world.
The Cinque Terre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, as a living cultural landscape with its national park and protected marine reserve.
Despite tourism, despite the railway, despite yachts, the Cinque Terre has kept its soul: fishermen still fish, farmers still cultivate vines by hand.
Very few places do more than seduce: they leave their mark on the soul.
The Five Earths are among them.
